High
Maintenance tells a personal
story about the power struggle in a relationship through
the high-concept conventions of the sci-fi genre.
I
aimed to make a film about the future but emblematic
of our era. As a result, High
Maintenance touches upon serial monogamy,
consumerism, and "personalized" new technology
in a world that is more linked than it has ever been,
yet somehow also more disconnected. The film hopefully
brings to light a condition that is uniquely human.
High
Maintenance
was made in a single week. 2 days of shooting, 3 days
of editing, 2 days of post sound and color. These limitations
were to keep output high and costs to a minimum. Needless
to say, it was a busy week.
I wanted to make
the quality and standard of a short that would typically
take three to six months from production to post. That
was the energy in the air and it was my cast and graduate
student crew's mutual goal and expectation.
When it screened
for the 520 filmmakers who composed the largest jury
at the Berlin Film Festival, we had finished our work
on it in post-production less than an hour before.
I am attracted
to personal films centered on interesting or obsessive
characters and relevant to our time. I also appreciate
economical narratives that work hard at the art of the
subtle reveal. This was my way of combining both. I
hope you enjoy.
High
Maintenance recently won a Student Academy Award
and was featured in Filmmaker Magazine. For More Information
